Owners of Tennessee garages and auto repair shops are not only entrusted to fix their customers’ cars, but they are also entrusted to keep those cars safe while in their control. Garage liability insurance and garage keepers insurance are designed to help you protect your customers’ property and your business in the event that accidents, injuries or property damage occurs.
A basic garage liability policy provides coverage for injuries that occur at the shop, e.g., customer slips and falls. In addition, garage liability insurance covers other liability claims such as discrimination and employee dishonesty. Garage liability insurance covers liability claims associated with automobiles owned by the business, but it does not cover customers’ cars that are left in the care of the shop.
Garage liability insurance can also cover products manufactured or sold by the shop that cause damage to a customer’s vehicle.
Garage keepers insurance protects you if a customer’s vehicle is damaged while it is in your care, custody or control. This protection is not included in the standard garage liability policy. You need this coverage to protect customer vehicles from occurrences such as fire, theft, bad weather or vandalism at your place of business. It does not cover damage that occurs from faulty workmanship or parts or insufficient warranties. Garage keepers insurance is usually sold with garage liability policies, but it is still a separate contract.
The contents of a customer’s vehicle are not covered under a garage keepers policy; garage keepers policies only cover vehicles, not personal property within the vehicles. Garage owners can add endorsements for coverage of customers’ personal property that is in their care.
The difference between garage liability insurance and garage keepers insurance is subtle but very important. In general, both are needed to make sure you have adequate protection. Garage liability insurance and garage keepers insurance is a valuable protection not just for auto repair shops but also for service stations, auto body shops, detail shops, vehicle electrical and repair shops, auto glass installers, oil change and lube shops, auto painting and pin striping operations, sound repair and installation shops, emissions testing sites, and those who offer upholstery, tops and sunroof repair.
We are pleased to offer this product throughout the State of Tennessee.
